Choosing Quality Breeding Stock
BREED STANDARDS. When purchasing any animal you should be aware of that animal's breed standards, whether you're talking about dogs, horses, goats or rabbits. Knowing the standards will put at ease in making your selection of Boer goats, whether at a production sale, an auction or at private treaty at someone else's farm or ranch. If you know those standards then you will not have to rely on someone else to point them out to you, because the person you're relying on may not necessarily be 100 percent correct all the time. You may find a copy of the South African breed standards at this site. Study them before making a selection so you can comfortably choose what will enhance your breeding program or start you off with "The Big Bang" rather than an apology to your friends for your selection. ![]() A T4 stud, "Martin," selected for his superior conformation and ability to pass on good traits like fertility and meat production to his offspring. Buying the correct goat can make a difference between selling your kids in the Fall for good prices and not selling your kids at all. If people come to your place to buy and have a copy of the breed standards with them, will you be able to have a selection of does or bucks for them to choose from?? A group of animals that conform to standards?? Understanding the breed standards sometimes is not easy. They were developed by the South African breeders and all decisions concerning those breed standards were based upon economics, productivity, fertility and the ability to survive in their natural environment. It all starts with choices. Make correct choices the first time and be assured you will succeed in this exciting new livestock industry. It has many opportunities, ones that can help you achieve financial rewards as well as be able to really "Live That Dream."
